Gold Medallist Sheehan Leads Strong Team to World Juniors in Kazan

Queensland teenager Georgia Sheehan will be looking to defend the gold medal she won two years ago when she joins a 15-strong Australian team at the World Junior Diving Championships in Russia next week.

17-year-old Sheehan won gold in the 3-metre springboard at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Penza, Russia, she also picked up a bronze in the 1-metre and a silver in the 3-metre synchro.

Sheehan will compete in the 3-metre, 1-metre and 3-metre synchro in Kazan next week.

She heads to Russia in good form, after winning gold in the 3-metre at the FINA Grand Prix on the Gold Coast last month.

Also competing next week will be South Australia’s Ross Todd, who won bronze in the boy’s 1-metre in Penza. Todd will re-contest the 1-metre and the platform next week.

Also returning after competing two years ago are Brodie Scapens (platform), Kurtis Mathews (3-metre, 3-metre synchro) and Matthew Carter (1-metre, 3-metre and 3-metre synchro).

And in the girl’s competition, Queensland’s Jayah Mathews will be returning, competing in the 1-metre, 3-metre and 3-metre synchro.

Joining Mathews and Sheehan will be Western Australian pair, Nikita Hains (platform) and Tamara Irvine (platform).

Australia will also have some of the country’s most exciting 15 and 14-year-olds competing in Group B competition in Kazan.

Jade Sweeney (platform), Sophie Johnson (1-metre, 3-metre), Kate Rosman (1-metre, 3-metre) and Ashleigh Meneses (platform) will contest the girls’ events, while Corey Jenkin (3-metre, platform), Luke Marshall (1-metre, platform) and Lachlan Cronin (1-metre and 3-metre) will take part in the boys’ events.

Australia will be looking to build on the two gold, one silver and three bronze medals it won in Penza.

The World Junior Championships begin on November 29, and run until December 4.
