Diver's Wrists - Managing wrist pain in young divers

Wrist injuries in young divers often occur due to repetitive end of range loading of a joint which lacks flexibility. Whilst in older divers this often results in tendon issues, it is the younger divers who are more likely to irritate that actual wrist joint.
With the onset of wrist pain, a course of action is often needed to settle symptoms. This involves rest/training load management, splinting of the wrist, ice to the affected area and massage of the forearm muscles. Once the initial pain has settled, wrist flexibility can be addressed.
The diver has to be able to achieve 90 degrees at the wrist when bending the hand back so a stretching program followed by gradual reloading is needed to minimise future aggravations.
As always prevention is better than having to rehabilitate so try to ensure adequate wrist flexibility is maintained and that no sudden changes in loading to the wrist occur.
If your kid is complaining of wrist pain, contact us at Ascend Physiotherapy on 9387 2699 and we’ll get them back on track to achieving their peak.
